Pokémon Catching Guide

To progress through the game you will need to battle. You cannot go through to game if don't battle! In the game you will have to battle with Gym Leaders for League Badges, trainers for Exp. Points, some times for items too and in a special case, for their Pokémon, but that's just only in Collessuem, but the point is that, for any kind of battle you will need a Pokémon.

You get one Pokémon in the beginning of the game, which is commonly known as the "starter".You can battle with the starter and can easily win the early battles of the game, but as you advance you will soon see new types of Pokémon, which will be stronger than the previous ones and you will begin to realize that you need much stronger Pokémon with newer types. For that you need to catch new Pokémon .Pokémon can be caught easily. For catching a Pokémon you will need four things:

  1. An area with grass/tall grass/sand/ice/cave/water/underwater etc with Wild Pokémon.
  2. A Pokémon that is already with you.
  3. A Poké/Great/Ultra/Masterball or a Net/Luxury/Diveball.
  4. Not too powerful moves and not too weak moves.
  5. Status Inflicting moves (Poison Powder,Stun Spore,Hypnosis etc)

Summary

1.First you need to go to a area with grass/tall grass/sand/ice/cave/water or any place where you can or have encounter Wild Pokémon .These places are easy to find. You will encounter different Pokémon in different places. Some are unique to their places and cannot be found on the other places while some are very common and can be encountered in almost every area and some are only found in their area but still are VERY VERY rare; a good example will be of the rare and famous Feebas. For catching a Pokémon like Feebas you also need a lot of patience. You can also fish and dive for a Pokémon.

2. Second, a Pokémon that is already with you; that is in your party. The Pokémon's Level should be according to the Level of the Pokémon in that area; for example: If you are in a area where the average Level of the Wild Pokémon is about Level 20 - 25, then your Pokémon's Level should be about 19 - 23.Why?? Because in this way, your Pokémon will not be very weak nor too strong and the Wild Pokémon will be the same.It is always a good idea to keep 2 - 3 Pokémon with you, just in case.

3. Ahh....Pokéballs, the item that you use to catch a Pokémon. They come in a variety of colors and designs but their purpose is the same to catch a Pokémon. However, they have their specifications. They are listed below with their specifications:

Pokéball The most cheap and weakest type of a ball. Although good at weak and low-level Pokémon, it does not work at any high level or legendry Pokémon. Works on any type of Pokémon. It captures Pokémon with the Level 2 - 15 and sometimes even Level 18 and 19.
Greatball A little expensive but much better than the Pokéball. Can be used to capture strong and mid-level Pokémon,it can be used to capture some high-level Pokémon .I am not sure but I doubt it can catch legendry Pokémon.Works on any type of Pokémon. It captures Pokémon with the Level 15 - 30 and sometimes even Level 33 - 38.
Ultraball

The most expensive of all balls and the second most powerful ball.It is used to capture very strong and high-level Pokémon. It can capture legendry Pokémon.Works on any type of Pokémon. Captures Pokémon with the Level 33 - 100.But to capture Pokémon with that Level 40 - 50 ,you need to have at least 20 - 30 Ultraballs.

Masterball

The most powerful ball.It will capture ANY Pokémon without a fail. You cannot buy it.It is available only one time in the game,so don't waste it.Use it wisely, if you take my opinion, use it on:

  • Sapphire/Ruby: Latias/Latios (Don't use it on Rayquaza or Kyogre/Groudon,they both can be captured easily using Ultraball)
  • FireRed/LeafGreen: The Legendry Beasts ( Mewtwo and Deoxy can be captured easily using Ultraball)
  • Collessuem: Raikou or Metagross or Tryanitar
  • Emerald: Mew or Latias/Latios

That is just my opinion, you can use it on any Pokémon, just try to use it on such a Pokémon that cannot be easily captured with other balls.

Netball

No it is not used for catching Internet...actually it is best used on Water and Bug types, Why? Because, when this ball is used on a Water or a Bug Pokémon it raises the chances of capture by 1.5x. You will not believe it but,I captured Kyogre in my Sapphire game with just 1 Netball, It happened like this:

I sent Sceptile,Kyogre used Calm Mind,Sceptile used Giga Drain,Kyogre's HP went to red,Kyogre used Calm Mind,I used a Netball and the next second, Kyogre was mine.

This ball is pretty useful for capturing Kyogre. It is more powerful than Ultraball if used on Water or Bug types. But what does it do when used on other types, well if Netball is used on any other type except Water and Bug,then it's capture rate will be like Pokéball or a Greatball.(I am not confirmed here,if I am wrong, then please correct me by sending me a e-mail at shaheryar.deoxy@gmail.com.)It is expensive though.

Luxuryball Not a luxury for you but a great luxury for your Pokémon. It is used on Pokémon that evolves by happinness. Why? Because if used on a Pokémon that evolves on happiness then,it makes that Pokémon a happier.Like the base happiness for a Pokémon is 70 then I think it raises the base happiness of that Pokémon to 100 or 80(I am not confirmed here,if I am wrong, then please correct me by sending me a e-mail at shaheryar.deoxy@gmail.com.) It works on any Pokémon. This ball is only useful if you want to get a Crobat, so use it on Zubat.
Diveball Same as Netball except it is best used on Pokémon that can be captured when you are using the HM Dive.If you are underwater and a Pokémon showed up,then you should use a Diveball. You should use this ball on Chinchou or Clamperl or Relicanth. Again it is expensive.
Safari Ball Safari ball is not for sale. Not because it is a very good ball, because it is used only in Safari Zone. You get 30 of these. It works exactly like a Pokéball. Although it is a little bit stronger.

Well there you have it, all the Pokéballs and their description.

4. Moves..their power should be moderate because you don't want to faint the Pokémon and if they are weak then you won't be able to damage the Pokémon.Use moves like Scratch and Tackle if it is a low-level Pokémon and moves such as Flame Thrower and Ice Beam if it is a high-level or legendry Pokémon.

5. Status Inflicting Moves are Poison Powder,Sleep Powder,Will-o-Wisp,Ice Beam and all those moves which gives you a Status. These moves are optional but if you are going to capture a high-level or legendry Pokémon, they will make the process much easier. If you freeze Rayquaza or specially Mewtwo, capturing them with a Ultraball will be a snap.

Detailed Explanation

When you have found the area where you want to capture Pokémon.Buy a few balls according to the type of the Pokémon in that area.Keep a nice Pokémon ,preferably your starter, that has moderate moves and it's Level should be according to Level of the Pokémon of that area.Moves should be moderate and according to Level of the Pokémon you are going to encounter. This is important. Status Inflicting Moves are optional but keep them if you are going to capture a high-level or legendry Pokémon. Now let's suppose a battle scenario(it's about a weak Weedle and my Charmander):

First walk in the grass and wait for a Pokémon to show up

In my example a Weedle showed up.

Don't throw the ball directly!! First weaken it.

When you weaken it so much that it's H.P is red or at least yellow and better yet apply a Status on it, then go to your Bag.

Go to the Pokéballs section and select a Ball,I used the Pokéball.

Throw the ball and keep your fingers crossed .I have heard pressing A and B simultaneously helps but I am not confirmed.

The ball will move and chances are that it will catch it or it will break ,if the Pokéball breaks then either weaken it more, apply a Status if you haven't before or throw another Ball.

If you are lucky then the Ball will catch that Pokémon and a golden stars will appear on the Ball. Then you can view it's Pokédex entry and give it a nickname.

Viola!! You have a Pokémon! Mind you these techniques do not work well on Legendry Pokémon.I will write another guide about Legendry Pokémon Catching soon.(*whew* *long sigh*My hand is aching.)
