Demystifying Writers’ Demons©

One by One  by Joan Upton Hall

Curly Quotes Gone Astray:

As you type on the computer, have you ever noticed the quotation mark curling the wrong direction like a bad hair day? Here are two likely cases:

(a) For a quote within a quote, a single quote followed by a double one produces three marks in a row as in:

(correct) He said, “I heard the buyer say, ‘I accept your price.’”

(backward curl) He said, “I heard the buyer say, ‘I accept your price.’ “

Cause: You made a space between the single quote and the double one, causing your computer to assume you are starting a new quote. Cure: Don’t space there.

(b) To show that a speaker is interrupted, we use a dash (double hyphen acceptable) and close the quotation mark, as in:

(correct) “I see the wreck, but what--”  (or you can insert an emdash: — )

(backward curl) “I see the wreck, but what—“

Cause: Again your computer assumes you are starting a new quote. Cure: Make the quotation mark first; then go back one space to insert your dash.

* If anyone knows how to do Example (b) an easier way, please tell me.

Do demons bedevil your writing? Similar, confusing words? Grammar, punctuation, or capitalization rules? “The Demystifier” will clear up the mystery (primary reference unless otherwise noted: Garner, Bryan A. Dictionary of Modern American Usage. N.Y.: Oxford University Press). Address questions and comments to freelance editor, Joan Upton Hall, PO Box 179, Hutto, TX 78634, or email: jmuHall@aol.com. More problems like the one above are demystified in the booklet, 50 Writers’ Tips. Find a few of them at “books, etc.” on website: www.JoanUptonHall.com.

Joan Upton Hall's anthology, GHOSTLY TALES FROM AMERICA'S JAILS (Atriad Press), is to be released  mid-December. Stories from all over the U.S. tell of spirits still doing time in these old jails -- some since the 1600s! Check website: http://www.JoanUptonHall.com
