Health News
And the penny went in and went all the way down. This isn't the
actual x-ray of Nicki. His penny was
in his stomach already when his x-ray was taken. It was pretty cool to see the
penny in his stomach. He's still waiting to claim his souvenir.
Personally, I think it's out and he just wants to get another x-ray taken. To read more about children swallowing pennies and how dangerous it may be please click on the picture.

Happy Birthday Nicki!! Mommy LOVES You!!

Authors of the AMG have donated books for a silent auction to raise money for the American Cancer Society. A representative from the AMG will mann the booth on Friday, June 16 from 6-10:30 pm. (I attended from 4:30-10:30.)
Relay for life is a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event----because cancer never sleeps. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.
How'd
we do? Before Jim had arrived, I got stung by a bee, right in the left wrist.
My hand went numb for about a minute, but then I was otay. I think it was a
lucky bee sting, because I sold my book for $15.00, I had 3 bids. We
started the bids at $5.00. My kids ran to each woman who walked by and handed
them a bookmark, (some men wanted one too,) and when I was out of those, my
kids started handing out my business cards. I reached about 200 people that way.
So, it was fun, it was for a good cause, and I was there to support the AMG as well as the American Cancer Society. And I stopped smoking for 6 1/2 hours.

Do you have A Demon?
Now sometimes when Nicki's a wild child we call him Nicodemos, but that's not what we're talking about here. I have had a demon for 22 years and Author Joan Uptown Hall has explained to me that these words that I memorized as a child are helping verbs. First read her tips on Active/Passive Voice and then see info on my demon below.

Do demons bedevil your writing? Similar, confusing words? Grammar, punctuation, or capitalization rules? “The Demystifier” will clear up the mystery (primary reference unless otherwise noted: Garner, Bryan A. Dictionary of Modern American Usage. N.Y.: Oxford University Press). Address questions and comments to freelance editor, Joan Upton Hall, PO Box 179, Hutto, TX 78634, or email: jmuHall@aol.com. More problems like the one above are demystified in the booklet, 50 Writers’ Tips. Find a few of them at “books, etc.” on website: www.JoanUptonHall.com.
It's funny because all my life I remember this saying that I learned in fourth grade and I still don't know why it was so important to remember this phrase for the rest of my life:
Be, Is, Am, Are, Was, Were, Been, Have, Has, Had, Do, Does, Did, May, Might, Can, Could, Should, Would, Shall, Will, Must, Being
What is so important about these words?
Good
grief! I can't imagine having a little kid memorize such a thing-- especially if
she doesn't know what it's for.
What they have in common is that all CAN serve as auxiliary (helping) verbs, but
some can stand alone as the main verb in the sentence. Here's what I mean:
1. Only the first seven and the last one on your list are be-verbs, meaning a
form of "to be": be, is, am, are, was, were, been, being. These can
stand alone to link a subject and complement (linking verb with predicate
adjective or predicate nominative), as in: "She is pretty; he was our
president." Or they can be helping verbs.
2. Some can mean something else when not used as helping verbs, as in: "I
have a penny; she has a quarter; they have a dollar," instead of (helping
an action verb) "She has given a donation."
Or: "I do math; he does the dishes; they did try," instead of (helping
an action verb) "I do want this; he does love cobbler; they did prosecute
the criminals."
That's probably more than you wanted to know, but take what makes sense out of
it, and I hope you can put that worry to rest now. I believe you said you wanted
to order my "RX FOR YOUR WRITING ILLS" from Amazon.com.
The first chapter
explains how be-verbs drain your writing of vitality and show what to do about
it. I call it the "BVDS" or "be verb dependency syndrome."
Best,
Joan
