Do you remember what you were doing on 9/11 when the planes hit the World Trade Center? I was driving to work.

I remember that evening all I did was watch TV. (Yes, me, actually turn on the TV and watched for hours.) Outside was like a ghost town. I didn't see a single person, yet my son wanted to play outside. Out on the sidewalk he was drawing with chalk, and I watched him through my patio door while I tuned in to CNN.

Since it was getting dark, I walked outside to get my son, and there was just a dead silence that surrounded the area. Still, not a soul to be seen. No one coming home, no one leaving their apartments, no one on their patios or balconies, and no cars venturing into or leaving the parking lot.

I helped my son pick up the chalk and then suddenly gunshots echoed off of the two buildings. Some crazy person decided to blow off fireworks, but within the dead silence it sounded like gunfire. I may have screamed, I truly don't remember. But what I do remember, I remember my son's eyes, the fear. I was startled too, but not like he was and then he wailed. He cried so loudly that it echoed throughout the courtyard. That was my evening of September 11, 2001.

DuPage Woman Newspaper

It is always a privilege to work with Jim Durkin, Lillian Bjorseth, Josslyn Christmas, and Karon Gibson. It so happens that Josslyn won an ad in the DuPage Woman Newspaper and shared her winnings with the Authors Marketing Group. Karon surprised us all by being on the front cover. For the ad, Lillian and Josslyn worked on the wording while I did the collage of books. The books were randomly chosen from the AMG website and include: Well, you can just see for yourself.  On September 1st and for eight straight weeks you can pick up the DuPage Woman Newspaper in 3,000 different locations or to see the add click here.

3 Stars still isn't that bad.

Thank you to Marie Cassidy, The Magic Basement for telling me about Library Journal in which this organization does reviews before your book is published. Gives me an idea for The Years Between.

Marie’s book, The Magic Basement is a beautifully designed book on contemporary art history, in which at the time when she began to write it she took classes in the basement of the Art Institute Museum.

The Last Book I Read

This is Jenna Petersen's first book, a historical romance, and WOW what an author! What a book! There is romance in practically every page. It's exactly what I was looking for to release some of the tension in the back of my head. And drown away my worries. Jenna was able to grab my attention on the very first page. I usually can't get into a book until the second chapter. The cover is absolutely stunning as you can see. Dominick is hot! And Kathryn is beautiful! Jenna doesn't use words that the average person doesn't understand. Another amazing book by an amazing author. I absolutely loved Scandalous and I think I'm going to go read it again. Those love scenes are sizzling!

Actually, I just purchased Jenna's second novel From London with Love. I can't wait to start reading.

To purchase Falling Roses or any book on Amazon, please use my affiliate link. I'm quite broke.

A Webmaster Secret

You know that little icon in the browser. I have a Rose on mine. It also appears on the tab. And it should also appear if you bookmark the page. Anyway, after you download a "Freeware or Shareware" icon from somewhere, upload it, and it's best if you save it as favicon.ico and then stick this code in the <head> section of your pages. That means every single page in your website so that it will appear on all pages.

Demystifying Writers’ Demons©

One by One  by Joan Upton Hall

  Pluralizing compound nouns

Hyphenated terms - Pluralize these by adding s to the main noun:

     brothers-in-law, commanders-in-chief, courts-martial, editors-in-chief, knights-errant,

      rights-of-way, sergeants-at-arms, men-of-war (example of irregular plural)

Terms with hyphen dropped - Pluralize these likewise by adding s to the main noun: battles royal, heirs presumptive, maids of honor, notaries public, poets laureate, consuls general.

Memory tip: In subjects where the French dominated international relationships during the Middle Ages (law, politics, religion, heraldry), their phrases, as Garner says, “were adopted wholesale, syntax and all” (adjectives following nouns).

Disguised nouns - Pluralize by adding s at the end of the word for all compounds ending in ful.: cupfuls, mouthfuls, handfuls, lapfuls, platefuls, glassfuls, tubfuls.

But not if full is a separate word: Five trucks full of garbage drove away, and we cheered with hearts full of relief and lungs full of clean air.

Do demons bedevil your writing? Similar, confusing words? Grammar, punctuation, or capitalization rules? “The Demystifier” will clear up the mystery (primary reference unless otherwise noted: Garner, Bryan A. Dictionary of Modern American Usage. N.Y.: Oxford University Press). Address questions and comments to freelance editor, Joan Upton Hall, PO Box 179, Hutto, TX 78634, or email: jmuHall@aol.com. More problems like the one above are demystified in the booklet, 50 Writers’ Tips. Find a few of them at “books, etc.” on website: www.JoanUptonHall.com.
