Lillian Bjorseth now has a link on her website to the Slinkage page.  The Chicago Tribune dubs her a networking expert and the Association Forum of Chicagoland calls her the business networking authority. She's a speaker, trainer and author based in Chicago who can easily reach out across the USA (and internationally). She educates, entertains and inspires … all at the same time! Demystifying Writers’ Demons©

One by One  by Joan Upton Hall

I or me -The Case of the Tricky Personal Pronoun

Use nominative case for subject of a verb or predicate nominative (renames subject after a linking verb). Pronouns: I, she, he, they, we, (*also who, whoever)

He and I will present the program.” “I know who did this.” (who is the subj. of did)

“The last program presenters were he and I.” (Think: “He and I were presenters.”)

“The winners are she and they.” (Think: “She and they are the winners.”)

“Give it to whoever deserves it.” (whoever is the subject of deserves)

Who, shall I say is calling?” (Think: “Who is calling” - subject of is calling)

  • Use objective case for direct or indirect object or object of a preposition or verbal. Pronouns: me, her, him, them, us, (*also whom, whomever)

“Did you hear Josh and me?” “Give it to them and whomever you desire.” (objects)

  • Tip: The problem arises only with compounds, so when in doubt, try reading with pronoun only (say him for whom & he for who). In the compound: “She and

(I or me)...” (Read only: “Give it to me.” OR “I co-authored a book.” OR “It is I.”)

  * Note: Who and whom are relative pronouns rather than personal, but they also have objective and nominative cases.

Do demons bedevil your writing? Similar, confusing words? Grammar, punctuation, or capitalization rules? “The Demystifier” will clear up the mystery (primary reference unless otherwise noted: Garner, Bryan A. Dictionary of Modern American Usage. N.Y.: Oxford University Press). Address questions and comments to freelance editor, Joan Upton Hall, PO Box 179, Hutto, TX 78634, or email: jmuHall@aol.com. More problems like the one above are demystified in the booklet, 50 Writers’ Tips. Find a few of them at “books, etc.” on website: www.JoanUptonHall.com.

FYI-I receive hundreds of e-mails everyday. Please do not place Hi or Hello or RE: Hi in the subject line. I will not open those e-mails anymore, since they're normally from out of the country or for Viagra.

What are scripts? On this page I've used two. Instead of seeing the usual arrow there is a rose and the second one is the Happy Halloween that encircles it. Don't be frightened if your internet explorer gives you that stinkin' message. The scripts won't hurt you.
