More from Writer's Digest
Writing great songs is only half the work of becoming a successful songwriter—you also have to manage your business. For beginners and working songwriters alike, John Braheny’s The Craft and Business of Songwriting 3rd edition (Writer’s Digest Books) features dozens of exercises, examples and anecdotes from successful songwriters including Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow and Paul McCartney. This guide gives aspiring songwriters the insider secrets they need to navigate the music industry and make them more competitive in the marketplace, such as developing a great opening line:
“The first words from a singer’s mouth are critical, particularly if they’re the first words you’ve ever heard from that artist. It all goes into that first-impression evaluation you make as a listener about whether or not you like the record. So, with your writer’s hat on, think about how strongly you can interest the listener with that first line or lines. When a publisher or producer hears that first line, she will also be deciding whether to keep listening or turn it off. If she isn’t sold on the song, she will not be optimistic about selling it to an artist.
“Your first line should set the tone for the whole song and make us want to hear what comes next. Don’t fall prey to the temptation to start with ‘I’m just sittin’ here ...’ (a) writing this song, (b) thinking about you, or (c) looking at the (fill in the blank); ‘Woke up this mornin’ ...’ (didn’t we all?); or other equally uninteresting cliches. Though these might be penciled in to get your motor running, when you get down to a rewrite they should be the first things that get crossed out.”
