Additional Kitchen Design Tips
  • Determine your budget - be realistic when determining your budget. No one gets a million dollar kitchen for $1000. Plan for the major costs, which include cabinets, labor, appliances, storage systems, and fittings. Decide which are the most important factors and devote funds accordingly. Plan for discretionary spending, things do come up!

  • Work with your Space - Think of various layouts based on the current space available. Also - be creative! What if you moved that window? What about knocking out a wall? Its your kitchen, and your kitchen design should make you happy in the end.

  • Existing Facilities - Re-wiring and re-plumbing can add unnecessary costs to your kitchen design. Keep this in mind for placement of sinks, refrigerators, dish washers, and appliances.

  • Cleaning - The kitchen typically attracts the most mess. Keep this in mind when designing your kitchen. Tile and grout are known for attracting mold and grime. Light colored floors will show every spill and stain. Having a place for everything, and plenty of hidden storage, will keep your kitchen appearing neat and tidy. This also helps cut down on the cleaning efforts.

  • Lighting - Lighting creates the overall "mood" of the kitchen. Determine what type of mood you want to set with the initial kitchen design. Start with functional lighting. Lighting above the stove, above countertops, and inside cabinets typically fall into this category. Once you've established the "needed" lighting - work on the fun lighting. Perhaps colored lights, or something modern? With a bit of thought you can create a lighting plan that not only keeps you from working in the dark, but brightens up every aspect of your new kitchen designs.
